The hardware specifications describe what is referred to as a “commodity-priced computer”. The specifications are expected to change as newer and faster technology reaches a level of being commodity-priced. The current minimum specs are:
- 2.4 GHz processor or better (Capable of running 64 bit OS and applications.)
- 512 MB RAM
- 40 GB Storage (7200 RPM) (Local School Option)
- CD or CD/RW or DVD-ROM (Local School Option)
- Diskette Drive (Local School Option)
- USB 2.0 (Front panel access preferred)
- Integrated Video and Audio (ATI or NVIDIA Video Preferred)
- Keyboard
- Optical Mouse
- 1 year warranty
- Demonstrated ability to load and run Linux (Linspire 5.0, Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED10), RedHat and possibly other potential vendors)
Vendors should ensure that Linux drivers are available for all on-board chipsets for audio, video, etc. ATI or Nvidia graphics are preferred since these work with Xgl. Additional video chipsets may be added as drivers are developed and tested.
Depending on the local network environment, it may also be necessary to require a BIOS version that allows PXE, USB, and alternate boot sources.
Purchase Price
The above unit can be purchased from multiple vendors at a price point of between $290 - $299. If schools opt NOT to include a CD drive, diskette drive, or for those running thin client solutions, a hard drive, the price reflected above should be reduced appropriately. The $299 price reflects a fully configured system.
