School Accreditation

Pursuant to 511 IAC 6.1-1-1(a), all public schools in Indiana must be accredited. Nonpublic schools may seek accreditation. In order to be state accredited, a school must comply with all applicable legal standards and meet certain performance criteria in alignment with the state’s student-centered accountability system.

Accreditation Types

The following types of accreditation exist in Indiana:

Accreditation Types

State

  • Traditional public schools must hold state accreditation
  • Nonpublic schools may seek state accreditation
  • State accredited schools are assigned an annual accreditation status
  • State accredited schools must comply with all applicable statutes and regulations

Charter

  • For charter schools authorized by a state charter authorizer
  • Charter accredited schools are monitored by authorizers through charter agreement
  • Charter accredited schools are assigned an annual accreditation status
  • Charter accredited schools must comply with all applicable statues and regulations

Freeway

  • Accreditation type available to public & nonpublic schools that requires high performance in exchange for suspension of certain statutes & regulations
  • Freeway accredited schools are monitored through freeway contract
  • Freeway accredited schools are assigned an annual accreditation status
  • Freeway accredited schools must comply with all applicable statutes and regulations

Third Party (for nonpublic schools only)

  • Accreditation awarded by third party accrediting body approved & recognized by the State Board
  • Recognized nonpublic schools are monitored by the third party accrediting body
  • Recognized nonpublic schools are not assigned an annual accreditation status

Accreditation Statuses

Pursuant to IC 20-31-4-3(a), the State Board must establish accreditation levels and assign each school and corporation an accreditation status based on the criteria of 511 IAC 6.1-1. Below is a summary of each accreditation status. Up-to-date information on each school and corporation’s accreditation status may be found on Compass.

Accreditation Statuses

Full

  • School receives A, B or C

AND

  • School complies with all legal standards

Provisional

  • School receives a D

OR

  • School receives up to 3 consecutive Fs

Provisional: Legal Standards

  • School not already defined as “provisional”

AND

  • School does not comply with all legal standards

Probationary

  • School receives 4+ consecutive Fs
