Indiana's Common Core - English/Language Arts and Literacy

The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) has compiled the essential resources all teachers should consult as they work toward full implemenation of Indiana's Common Core Standards (INCC). These resources have been compiled into INCC Toolboxes, which can be found at the bottom of this page. Additional resources can be found on the Learning Connection in the IDOE - Indiana's Common Core English/Language Arts and Literacy community. Follow these steps to join the community:

Reading and Literacy Frameworks

To support high-quality instruction, IDOE has developed literacy frameworks. The literacy frameworks utilize scientifically-based research and provide guidance to parents and educators on the development of literacy in children and adolescents.

Making the Transition to INCC

Since the adoption of Indiana’s Common Core Standards in August, 2010, IDOE has worked with educators from around the state to develop resources for teachers and schools to use during the transition to INCC.


The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) is a consortium of states working together to develop a common set of assessments in English/Language Arts (including Literacy in Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects) and mathematics. These assessments are anchored in the Indiana Common Core Standards and designed to build a pathway to college and career readiness, mark students’ progress toward this goal, and provide teachers with timely information to inform instruction and provide student support. The PARCC assessments will be implemented during the 2014-15 school year.

Literacy Toolboxes

The INCC English/Language Arts Toolboxes are grade level resources compiled to assist in the transition to Indiana’s Common Core.

The toolboxes provide assistance with:

  • Comparing Indiana’s Common Core to the Indiana Academic State Standards;
  • Identifying “Critical Content” on assessments while transitioning to Indiana’s Common Core;
  • Determining effective instructional strategies based in research; and
  • Preparing for the PARCC assessment in 2014-2015.
