International Education encompasses world languages and cultural learning, exposure to global issues and challenges, study and internships abroad, and international exchanges of students, professionals and ideas in the classroom, in the workplace, and in the virtual world. International Education includes learning about effective education policies and practices abroad that we might adapt to improve education.

Our International Partners
The Indiana Department of Education currently has Memorandum of Understanding agreements with France, Spain, and the Republic of China (Taiwan) to facilitate student and teacher exchanges and professional development.
Since 2005, the Indiana Department of Education and the Nation of France have a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate educational exchanges for teachers and students between Indiana and the region of Alsace, France through a partnership with the Academy of Strasbourg, Strasbourg, France.
The Ministry of Education and Science (MEC, for its acronym in Spanish) carries out its educational activities in the United States and Canada through a network of offices directed by the central Office of Education and Science based in the Spanish Embassy in Washington, D.C., without hindering other competences entitled to the respective Diplomatic Missions.
The Ministry of Education of the Republic of China was established upon the founding of the Republic in 1912. It is in charge of making and implementing educational policies. In the past five decades, the MOE has successfully enhanced the quality of people in Taiwan, laying the solid cornerstone for societal transition, democratic development, cultural attainment, and economic achievements.
As part of an effort to promote academic collaboration as well as cultural and intellectual exchange with foreign countries, Taiwan has built a significant global presence, with 24 representative offices in major cities around the world. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Chicago was first established in July 1990 As one of the seven overseas arms of the Ministry of Education, R.O.C. (Taiwan), the Cultural Division's service area includes 10 states in the Midwestern United States, including Indiana.
State and Local Resources and Partners
The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, a nonprofit institution committed to enriching the lives of children, is the largest children's museum in the world. The more than 400,000-square-foot facility houses eleven major galleries that explore the physical and natural sciences, history, world cultures and the arts. Professional development workshops and institutes, as well as classroom resources are available for teachers as well.
Confucius Institutes are non-profit public institutes with the goal of promoting a friendly relationship with other countries and enhancing the understanding of the Chinese language and culture among world Chinese learners. The institutes embody the development trend of integrating Chinese language and culture into global society in the 21st century.
Global Indiana is a new avenue for Indiana educators to access information about the myriad opportunities available for world travel, for global education, and for partnerships with schools abroad.
As the best community resource for people with international needs, the International Center of Indianapolis helps the greater Indianapolis community to welcome and connect people of all cultures.
The Immigrant Welcome Center was created to calm those fears and ease the transition for immigrant newcomers to Indianapolis. Through a dedicated group of volunteers, the Immigrant Welcome Center helps people connect to the basic services they need to get their new lives off to a good start, setting them on the path to being self-sufficient in their new country.
International Studies in Schools (ISIS) is an innovative and award-winning distance learning program which uses interactive video technology to connect K-12 schools and community groups in Indiana and other states with Indiana University international students, scholars and specialists.

Ambassadors for Children (AFC) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving children around the world through short-term humanitarian service trips and sustainable projects. Through these programs, AFC will make a significant impact on world peace and understanding through face-to-face cultural exchanges.
Asia Society is the leading global organization working to strengthen relationships and promote understanding among the people, leaders, and institutions of Asia and the United States. They seek to enhance dialogue, encourage creative expression, and generate new ideas across the fields of policy, business, education, arts, and culture. Their membership network, The Partnership for Global Learning
connects state and district decision makers, school leaders, teachers, university faculty, and other stakeholders to increase the number of K-12 schools offering rigorous and relevant international studies curriculum and to increase the demand for investments in international education.
The Choices Program seeks to empower young people with the skills, knowledge, and participatory habits to be engaged citizens who are capable of addressing international issues through thoughtful public discourse and informed decision making.
The Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration (CILC) supports and advances education through videoconferencing and other collaborative technologies. A nonprofit, CILC offers access to quality professional development and student educational content, as well as consulting and technical assistance. This helps schools leverage technology to improve educational outcomes, while saving time and money.
The Council on Standards for International Educational Travel (CSIET) is a not-for-profit organization committed to quality international educational travel and exchange for youth at the high school level. Its purpose is to identify reputable international youth exchange programs, to provide leadership and support to the exchange and educational communities so that youth are provided with meaningful and safe international exchange experiences, and to promote the importance and educational value of international youth exchange.
A Global Community of collaborative learners, teachers, and academic experts in 200 countries and territories, ePals provides connections to students, classes, and school districts worldwide that are safe and secure and provide a global platform for learning online.
iEARN (International Education and Resource Network) is the world's largest non-profit global network that enables teachers and youth to use the internet and other technologies to collaborate on projects that enhance learning and make a difference in the world.
The Longview Foundation provides support and leadership for international education initiatives throughout the United States. Indiana's own initiatives, including the Indiana International Education Summit, held in February 2008 and the Indiana Education Goes Global resource guide, to be published in 2009, have been made possible through the generous financial support of the Longview Foundation.
Designed to broaden perspectives in culture and geography and to encourage service, Coverdell World Wise Schools offers educators standards-based lesson plans, connections to past and present Peace Corps volunteers as well as a "treasure trove" of resources that help U.S. schoolchildren better understand and appreciate the diverse cultures and issues of the world.
Sister Cities International is a non-profit citizen diplomacy network that creates and strengthens partnerships between U.S. and international communities. They strive to build global cooperation at the municipal level, promote cultural understanding and stimulate economic development.
A learning platform where teachers and students from around the world create learning projects, participate in a website competition, and browse a library of student projects. Participants develop 21st century skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, communications, creativity, technology, self direction, and cross cultural understanding.
The International Affairs Office (IAO) is responsible for the overall coordination of the Department of Education's international presence. IAO works with Department program offices, support units, and senior leadership as well as with external partners including other federal agencies, state and local agencies, foreign governments, international organizations, and the private sector. It administers over 40 international programs with annual budgets totaling over $120 million, and two-thirds of the Department's offices are involved in international initiatives as part of their work.
