On August 3, 2010, the Indiana State Board of Education unanimously voted to adopt the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics and English Language Arts. These standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.

Learn More about the Common Core State Standards
The Indiana Department of Education has held a series of webinars regarding the CCSS. Below are links to the achived videos, as well as descriptions of the presentations.
- Overview of the CCSS and PARCC: Learn more about the transition plan for the Common Core State Standards and the new Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessments.
- Mathematical Practices: One of the greatest needs of focus for math teachers is the implementation of the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Learn more about the math practices, their implications in the classroom, and available resources for implementation.
- Text Complexity: The CCSS require much greater attention to text complexity at all levels. Learn more about the elements of text complexity, their implications in the classroom, and available resources for implementation.
Making the Transition to the Common Core State Standards
1. Four Major Shifts In Literacy - Four short videos that explain significant shifts in English/Language Arts and Literacy standards
2. Implementing the Standards for Mathematical Practice - A short video with accompanying resources that explains the Standards for Mathematical Practice
3. Literacy Standards for History/Social Studies, Science, & Technical Subjects - Content-specific videos that explain the Literacy standards in individual content areas
4. English Language Arts Transition Guidance - Resources developed to assist teachers in understanding the gaps between the Indiana Academic Standards and the CCSS for English/Language Arts
5. Mathematics Transition Guidance - Resources developed to assist teachers in understanding the gaps between the Indiana Academic Standards and the CCSS for Mathematics
6. Assessment Guidance and Common Core Additions for 2012-13 - Assessment guidance for prioritizing the Indiana Academic Standards, as well as CCSS for Math and English/Language Arts, to be added in for the 2012-13 school year
7. Transition Standards for 2013-14 (Mathematics) - In 2013-14, schools should teach the full range of the Common Core standards. This set of transition standards outlines the Indiana Academic Standards that should be included to ensure students are prepared for ISTEP+.
8. External Resources - Resources developed by other state agencies and organizations to help educators understand and effectively implement the Common Core State Standards.
9. High-Quality Tasks for Improving Instruction - Open-ended items that will be used in statewide workshops around the CCSS for Mathematics and the RISE Evaluation and Development System in June 2012.

Resources for Parents
The National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has developed guides for helping parents to understand the learning expectations at each grade level for the Common Core standards. The Parents' Guide to Student Success are availble for mathematics and language arts and are provided in both English and Spanish.
