Alternative Education Distribution |
Calculations for the distribution of Alternative Education grant funds for the 2006 calendar year
indicate the payment amount to be $551.79 per full-time equivalent (FTE) student. Your treasurer will receive one check for all of the approved alternative education programs operated by your school corporation in 2006. These funds should be credited to Fund 190, Receipt Account 3211 and must be used specifically for alternative education. If you need to figure the amount per program, multiply $551.79 by the program’s actual FTE as identified on the Full-Time Equivalent Student Report form that was submitted to the Department.
The per FTE student amount continues to be less than the $750 maximum because of the
reduction imposed by the Governor’s Deficit Management Plan and increased participation in alternative education programs. Given that the funding amount is fixed and that the actual level of participation is not reported until the time of the distribution, it is very hard to notify you in advance about the situation with any degree of accuracy. We recognize that this creates budget problems at the local level and have done all we can to maintain funding, including adding some of our administrative funds to the distribution.
Our department is continuously trying to improve alternative education programming and will be holding regional meetings in April. A memo on these meetings will be sent out in superintendent’s mail in March and posted to the Educational Options website at http://www.doe.in.gov/alted/ in the Find It Fast box. The morning session will feature Leah Nellis, Director of the Blumberg Center at Indiana State University, presenting on Response to Intervention (RTI). We hope you will encourage your alternative education staff to attend this free training. In addition to her presentation, there will be a meeting for alternative educators to review the new DOE-AL Report (available at http://www.doe.in.gov/stn/welcome.html ) that must be submitted in July and to discuss changes in the online grant, including the new section on program goals.
