Best practice
is a term that is used by many groups in society to describe "what
works" in a particular situation or environment. These practices can
also be called researched-based practice or scientifically-based practice
if there are data to support its success in the field. The bottom line is
that a particular practice has worked for someone within a given set of
variables, therefore it is a best practice for them. Remember that "what
works" for one teacher in a given educational environment with a specific
group of students, may not work for you.
If you realize
that certain variables could have an effect on results, your next step may
be to analyze what aspects of the educational environment have the greatest
impact on improving achievement and are unique to your school. The following
are just a few of the possible variables that could effect your results:
| Teacher |
School
Locale |
Educational
Climate |
Parent
Involvement |
Funding |
| Instructional
Practices |
Ethnicity |
Curriculum |
District
Support |
Attendance |
| Class
Size |
Socio-Economic
Status |
Instructional
Leadership |
Community
Support |
Time
Management |
After identifying
the areas that have the greatest impact on student achievement at your
school, the next step may be to find schools that are "like you" based
on selected variables. Identify schools that are facing similar concerns
and contact those who may be showing success in the area that has been
designated
for improvement.
