IMAST Transition Information

Posted: Wed, 08/17/2011 - 8:37am Updated: Thu, 07/02/2015 - 3:17pm

Background Information

Under existing U.S. Department of Education regulations, states were allowed to develop alternate assessments aligned to modified academic achievement standards (AA-MAAS) for some students with disabilities and use the results of those assessments for accountability purposes under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Indiana’s response to those regulations was the development and implementation of the Indiana Modified Achievement Standards Test (IMAST). Indiana schools have administered IMAST to eligible students since the spring of 2010.

The U.S. Department of Education has provided regulations to transition away from AA-MAAS to college- and career-ready standards and general assessments that are aligned to those standards and accessible to all students. States that administered alternate assessments based on modified academic achievement standards are no longer permitted to administer such assessments after the 2013-14 school year.

Local Implications

In response to the change in Federal regulations currently undergoing the rulemaking process, the IMAST assessment will “sunset” after the Spring 2014 administration. As a result, Case Conference Committees will need to determine the most appropriate assessment in which students will participate during the 2014-15 school year.
