Clarification on Communication Disorders Licensing Issues

Based on IC 25-35.6-1-7, which was amended in the 2007 session of the General Assembly, all individuals who have earned a master’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university in speech and hearing therapy and/or communication disorders will receive an initial practitioner’s license.  If they have evidence that they have registered in the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY), they may use the CFY to replace the Indiana Mentoring and Assessment Program (IMAP).  If they select the CFY in place of IMAP, their CFY supervisor would replace the mentor.  When an individual applies for an initial practitioner license for Communication Disorders, he/she must submit the following to the Division of Professional Standards:

  • Application
  • Fee of $35
  • Limited criminal history report
  • Official transcripts
  • Copy of CFY Registration card from the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency
  • Copy of card and certificate confirming CPR/Heimlich

All materials should be sent in the same packet.

Upon successful completion of the CFY and after he/she has earned the Clinical Competence Certificate (CCC), the candidate would be eligible for the proficient practitioner’s license after submission of the appropriate application materials (application, licensing fee of $35, limited criminal history check, copy of their IPLA license for Speech Pathologist).  The statute does not allow the division of professional standards to renew an initial practitioner license.

Applicants who wish to obtain a license in communication disorders are not required to complete Praxis I.

Individuals who have earned a master’s degree in speech and hearing therapy and/or communication disorders do not need to apply for an emergency permit.  The emergency permit is intended for applicants who have earned a bachelor’s degree in speech and hearing therapy and have not yet completed the master’s degree.
