New Substitute Permit Rule |
The promulgation process for the new substitute teaching permit has ended and the new rule will go into effect immediately. Attached is a copy of the new substitute permit rule. The rule will continue to adhere to the procedures all school districts have followed for the last five years under the substitute pilot. The only major change is that all substitute permits will be valid for three years from the date of issue. Please note that the rule requires each school district to have a substitute plan with the Indiana Professional Standards Board. However, if you submitted a plan for the substitute pilot, then you will not need to submit another plan, unless or until you wish to make changes to the plan.
Currently, all substitute permits expire on June 30, 2003. Current substitute teachers will need to reapply prior to the beginning of the 2003-2004 school year; however, we can begin accepting applications for the new substitute permit immediately. This timeline was purposefully designed to give school districts and their substitute teachers ample time to apply without losing any school days. Current processing time is two weeks from receipt of the application. However, because of the heavy volume anticipated this summer, it is recommended that applicants who need to renew their permit do so as soon as possible. The application process will remain the same. The school district will need to make application on behalf of the substitute and the applicant will need to submit a certified check or money order in the amount of $15 along with a limited criminal history report (if the report has exceeded the one-year validity date).
Applicants who applied after February 12, 2003, and received our special memorandum will all be issued substitute permits with the new expiration date.
