Year 1 -- Session 1
Introduction:
- Participants should make a nametag.
- Complete the activity of Identifying Personal Artifacts. Discuss the activity.
- Present an overview of the portfolio assessment program - discuss domains and methods of demonstrating standards (videos, commentary, reflection, etc.) that the beginning teacher will experience in the portfolio preparation.
- Discuss Indiana Standards for Teachers, INTASC Principles, and Indiana
proficiencies (Core 40) – see activity below.
Focus:
- Mathematical Tasks (Copies needed from handbook) – discuss.
- Go through INSTRUCTIONAL TASKS (see below). These are the guiding questions.
- Model a standards-based lesson.
1. Speedway Math
2. Human Graphing
3. Name That Classmate
Standards Connection: Standards #1 - #4 and #7 (Indiana Standards for Teachers)
Evaluation Framework: Overhead of…
INSTRUCTIONAL TASKS
How well does the teacher select and implement tasks that promote student understanding of mathematics?
- 1.1 – Describe the focus of the learning tasks and how they provide students
opportunities to develop mathematical understanding.
- 1.2 – Describe the appropriateness of the tasks based on the abilities, interests and
learning styles of the students.
- 1.3 – Describe the accuracy and clarity of the tasks.
- 1.4 – Describe the teachers’ use of materials, models, and/or technology to
support students learning.
Assignment: Choose an objective for your students.
Develop a task to meet the objective.
Teach the lesson.
Reflect on the lesson.

Standards, Standards, Standards!!!
Materials: Make a sign for each one of the 10 teaching standards, Standards
for Teachers of Mathematics.
Handout: Standards for Teachers of Mathematics (IPSB – Indiana
Professional Standards Board)
Allow about 5 minutes for them to read only the 10 standards.
In small groups (2 or 3), the participants should discuss where each of the standards fit in relation to the five sections of the portfolio (tasks, discourse, environment, analysis of learning, and analysis of teaching). As the group decides where each standard should be placed have them tape the sign you made next to that standard. Any discrepancies between the groups should be discussed. (Note: A link between the teaching standards and the portfolio has just been made. You may wish to use the additional handouts and make similar links.)
Additional handouts: Indiana Proficiency Guide, INTASC Principles,
and Core 40 Content Standards
