The Comprehensive Standards Document Advisory Group
(CSDAG) was called to order by Dave Kinman at 8:40 a.m. on May 4, 1999,
at the Administrative Service Center of the Metropolitan School District
of Washington Township located at 3801 East 79th Street, Indianapolis.
Update/ Review
Dave Kinman opened the meeting by asking each person to discuss the progress
of the CSDAG and what needs remain. The following comments were offered:
- The progress made so far has been good; the next step is solid communication and support to schools so that school systems can support veteran teachers who do not have life licenses (e.g., support through mentoring and professional development). This issue was considered to be the most important.
- An effort must be made to recognize the concerns of those who are currently working in education.
- Attention will need to be given to practical issues such as the shifting roles of new teachers and their mentors during the induction period.
Indiana Professional Standards Board (IPSB) and Indiana Department
of Education (IDOE) K-12 Alignment
The CSDAG discussed recommendations made by Lyn Klosowski and David Cooper.
It was agreed that the alignment was most clear when approached in a broad
sense by looking at unifying themes rather than performances. It was agreed
that an IPSB-IDOE alignment grid would be included in the Comprehensive Standards
Document (CSD).
Integration/Four Themes/Gifted and Talented (GT)
The CSDAG re-examined the four themes (reading, technology, diversity, and
exceptional needs) and discussed the option of submitting a recommendation
to the Board with the CSD regarding the need for more explicit attention
to these themes in the form of an integration standard. It was considered
that reference to GT students might be included in this recommendation (for
a total of five themes).
The CSD
Marie Theobald provided an update on the development of the opening page
for the WEB-based CSD, and the CSDAG discussed the format and details of
the final draft of the CSD which will be submitted to the Board at the June
Board meeting.
Assignments
All CSDAG members agreed to review Draft Early Childhood documents.
Adjournment
The CSDAG meeting was adjourned at 4:15 p.m.
