To:  Members, Indiana Professional Standards Board
From:  Philip Metcalf, Chair, Teacher Education Committee
 Date:  November 17, 1999
Subject:  Calumet College of St. Joseph Accreditation at the Initial Level

During February 7 - 10, 1999, an Indiana Board of Examiners (BOE) team visited Calumet College of St. Joseph to determine the extent to which the professional education unit met the standards for state accreditation. The team report listed all nineteen standards as "Met" or "Met with Weakness." A copy of the report was sent to Dr. Sam Wright, Director, Education Program. In May 1999, the Institutional Rejoinder was received, detailing the college's response to the weaknesses.

On June 10, 1999, the Unit Accreditation Committee of the Indiana Professional Standards Board (IPSB) met to review the BOE report and Institutional Rejoinder. A recommendation for accreditation at the initial level was submitted to the IPSB Teacher Education Committee (TEC) for consideration. At its June 21, 1999, meeting, the TEC concurred with this recommendation. A copy of the IPSB Accreditation Action Recommendation is enclosed.

TEC Recommendation:

The TEC recommends that the IPSB grant accreditation at the initial level to the professional education unit at Calumet College of St. Joseph. The next onsite review will take place in spring 2004.
