Agenda Item VII.A.1.

M E M O R A N D U M

To: Members, Indiana Professional Standards Board

From: Philip Metcalf, Chair, Teacher Education Committee

Date: April 26, 2000

Subject: Purdue University Calumet - Continuing Accreditation at the Initial Level

During April 10 - 14, 1999, a joint National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)/Indiana Board of Examiners (BOE) team visited Purdue University Calumet. The purpose of this visit was to determine the extent to which the professional education unit continued to meet NCATE/state standards at the initial level. A copy of the report was sent to Dr. Richard Roames, Unit Head, Department of Education. In July, 1999, the Institutional Rejoinder was received, detailing the university's response to the weaknesses.

During its fall 1999 meeting, the Unit Accreditation Board of NCATE decided to grant continuing accreditation with probation at the initial teacher preparation level. The probation requires an on-site review of the professional education unit before the fall 2001 semester. A copy of the NCATE Accreditation Action Report is enclosed.

Although Purdue University Calumet has been granted continuing accreditation with probation at the initial level by NCATE, the university has decided to seek full accreditation. Based on its desire to continue to seek national accreditation, it is suggested that the TEC recommend that the Board grant continuing accreditation with stipulations to the unit.

Continuing accreditation by the IPSB with stipulations is synonymous with NCATE accreditation with probation.

TEC Recommendation:

It is the recommendation of the TEC for the Board to grant Purdue University Calumet continuing accreditation with stipulations at the initial level. Purdue University Calumet has elected to seek full accreditation by NCATE, to be financed and carried out by the institution. The next on-site review at the initial level must take place within two years (no later than fall 2001) to continue accreditation beyond this two year period. In addition, progress on weaknesses is to be included in the IPSB/NCATE annual report.
