Agenda Item VII. A. 3.
M E M O R A N D U M
To: Members, Indiana Professional Standards Board (IPSB)
From: Philip Metcalf, Chair
IPSB Teacher Education Committee (TEC)
Date: April 26, 2000
Subject: Accreditation Probation and Stipulations - Information
In reviewing accreditation status reports for teacher preparation institutions, the TEC has noted that the term stipulations is being used by the IPSB synonymously with the term probation used by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Since the IPSB is in partnership with NCATE, the TEC believes that the accreditation status language should be consistent.
NCATE uses the term stipulations in some initial accreditation decisions. It uses probation in some continuing accreditation decisions. The IPSB has used stipulations in its official action in both cases.
The NCATE/IPSB Protocol states that the IPSB will use the NCATE Accreditation Action Reports in its decisions for state accreditation status regarding Indiana's teacher preparation institutions. Therefore, the TEC Chair recommends the following:
- When the NCATE decision uses probation, the
IPSB accreditation action will use the same term, beginning with actions
taken by the IPSB after July 1, 2000.
- When the NCATE decision uses stipulations, the
IPSB accreditation action will use the same term (this is present practice).
- This recommendation should be placed on the June 2000 Board agenda for action.
