Subject: Accreditation Decision Language - Action

On April 26, 2000, the Board received information from the TEC regarding accreditation language used by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the IPSB concerning accreditation status recommendations for Indiana teacher preparation institutions. The TEC indicated it would bring a recommendation for action to the Board at its June 21-22, 2000, meeting.

Since April 26, the IPSB has acquired the attached updated information from NCATE regarding accreditation status decisions. At NCATE's Unit Accreditation Board meeting in March 2000, updated language was approved concerning the following:

1. Decisions for Initial Institutions - initial accreditation , provisional accreditation, and denial of accreditation, and

2. Decisions for Continuing Institutions - continuing accreditation, accreditation with conditions, and accreditation with probation.

Please see the attached document, NCATE 2000 Accreditation Decisions, for detailed definitions of each decision listed above. NCATE's decisions will apply to pilot institutions with visits scheduled in fall 2000 and spring 2001and to all institutions with visits scheduled in fall 2001 and beyond.

The TEC believes it is reasonable to recommend that the Board approve the language as attached and grant the TEC permission to use language consistent with NCATE as future changes occur.

TEC Recommendation:

The TEC recommends that the Board approve the attached NCATE language for accreditation decisions regarding all Indiana teacher preparation institutions, effective with visits beginning in fall 2000 and continuing beyond, and that the TEC be given permission to use language consistent with NCATE as future changes occur.
