SUBJECT: Revision of Statement of Intent Timeline – License Renewal

At its September 21, 2000, meeting, the Continuing Education Committee reviewed the Board’s June 21, 2000, adoption of the committee’s recommendations to modify the proposed rules for teacher relicensure. It also discussed Tom Hansen’s presentation at the September 20, 2000, Board Discussion Session related to promulgating proposed rules for continuing education. Mr. Hansen recommended a direct transfer of the current teacher license renewal rules into the proposed rules for the 2000 promulgation process. He also recommended the Board adopt rules based on the results of the continuing education pilots for the 2001 rules promulgation process.

The Board also adopted a "Transition Timelines Notice of Intent" at its September 21, 1999, meeting. This timeline places the effective date for beginning the new teacher license renewal procedures as January 1, 2002. Because of the pilot project and rule promulgation timelines noted above, it will not be possible to meet the Board-adopted timeline for the teacher license renewal procedures.

As a result, the CEC made the following recommendations to the Executive Committee at its October 18, 2000, meeting:

I. Change the effective date for beginning the new teacher license renewal procedures from January 1, 2002, to January 1, 2003.

II. Notify all interested and affected parties of this change to the Transition Timeline.

The Executive Committee unanimously approved the recommendation.
