Subject: Approval of Mentor Training Programs Pilot
With the advent of the new performance-based system of licensure, the Teacher Induction Committee (TIC) views it essential to provide quality training of mentors to enhance the support of beginning teachers.
On June 21, 2000, the IPSB approved the recommendation to establish state approval of mentor training programs. In recognition of the various entities interested in becoming program providers, the TIC has developed the attached format of submission to initiate a pilot of IPSB program approvals. The format will be posted on the IPSB Web Page with an accompanying electronic mail message to unit heads, school superintendents, education service centers, and teacher associations.
A limit of fifteen programs will be accepted for review on or before February 1, 2000 to be approved by the TIC in accordance with the scoring criteria, geographic state distribution and varied representation of entities. Program providers will bear the cost with the exception of the scoring of applicants by the TIC.
Recommendation:
The TIC recommends to the Indiana Professional Standards Board that an initial pilot of up to fifteen applicants be solicited for mentor training programs by February 1, 2000. Programs will be selected, scored, and approved by the TIC members. Program providers will bear the cost with the exception of the scoring of applicants by the TIC.
