How do I renew my substitute permit?

A

Contact the school corporation where you want to serve as a substitute. All substitute permits, whether a renewal or original, are now recommended through the employing school corporation.

Do I need a permit to substitute for different school districts?

A Contact each school district where you seek to be employed to see if they would accept a copy from the other school district.

I don't have my degree; can I substitute teach?

A

Yes, Contact the employing school district to see what the qualifications are. Each school district establishes the specific requirements for a substitute teacher.

Do I need a criminal history report and fingerprints?

A The Division of Professional Standards (DPS) requires an original limited criminal history report from Indiana State Police. You do not need to send fingerprints. The criminal history report is valid for one year by Indiana State law.

Do I need an original limited criminal history for the DPS & the employing school district?

A

Yes, the school districts are required to have the limited criminal history check for their employees, just as the DPS is required to have it before certifying a substitute teacher.

Is a substitute certificate the same as a teaching license?

A No, the substitute permit allows the holder to serve only as a substitute teacher.

Do I need another original limited criminal history report if I already have one on file with the Indiana Professional Standards Board?

A

If you have the original limited criminal history report on file, and it is less than one year old when your application for substitute certificate is received by the DPS, then no additional original limited criminal history is required.

How long are substitute permits valid?

A All substitute permits are valid for three years from the date the materials are received in our office.

What materials are required to obtain an Indiana Substitute Teaching Certificate?

A

A $15.00 money order or cashier's check payable to the State of Indiana (This office will not accept cash or personal checks), a substitute application from the school corporation ( including the superintendents signature), and an original criminal history report from Indiana State Police.
