Guidelines for Preapproval of CRU Program Providers

 

  1. Only programs offered by approved providers may be accepted for CRUs for license renewal. The following are the Indiana organizations that may be approved:
    • an accredited college or university;
    • a school corporation or combination of school corporations;
    • an educational service center organized under IC 20-1-11.3;
    • a joint program organized under IC 20-5-11;
    • an interlocal agreement program organized under IC 36-1-7;
    • the Indiana State Board of Education through the Department of Education;
    • Indiana Professional Standards Board;
    • or a professional educator organization organized under Indiana law.

  2. Certification Renewal Units (CRUs). One (1) CRU is earned for every two (2) contact (clock) hours of participation in an approved program. Ten (10) CRUs are earned for each one (1) quarter hour of academic credit, and fifteen (15) are earned for every one (1) semester hour of academic credit. (CRUs will be only in whole units.)
     
  3. Programs must be in experiences that will assist in maintaining and improving professional capabilities in the participant's areas of licensure (major, minor, endorsement, primary, supporting area) or professional education.
     
  4. The program sponsor is responsible for submitting to Indiana Department of Education, Division of Professional Standards within thirty (30) days of the program's completion, names of program participants and the number of CRUs granted on the Verification of Attendance Form. Examples of these forms have been provided to the approved sponsors with their approval letters.
     
  5. Uniform certificates documenting the professional development experience and the number of CRUs earned will be sent by the program sponsor to the individual participants.
     
  6. Sponsors of the program should advise the participant that she/he will be held responsible for submitting verification of CRUs to Teacher Licensing for the license renewal. The school superintendent or chief executive officer will serve as agent to verify CRUs for renewal of teachers residing or teaching in her/his corporation.

An Indiana organization wishing to become an approved provider should submit the APPLICATION to Assessment, Division of Professional Standards, State House, Room 229, Indianapolis, IN 46204-1953.

PROGRAM SUBMITTED BY SCHOOL CORPORATIONS MUST BE SIGNED BY THE SUPERINTENDENT.

PROGRAM SUBMITTED BY COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY DESIGNEE MUST BE SIGNED BY DESIGNEE.

Program approval is valid for four years or until Continuing Education rules are in place.
