Out-Of-State Teacher Preparation Programs

Online Teacher Preparation and Master's Degree Programs
(Out-of-State Colleges/Universities)

There have been numerous inquiries regarding Indiana's acceptance of out-of-state online teacher preparation or master's degree programs for Indiana teacher licensing. The following information is critical for you to read, if you are considering enrolling in such a program.

YES, you may be licensed in Indiana, if:

  1. the out-of-state institution is NCATE* accredited, or
  2. the out-of-state institution has an Indiana approved unit assessment system (UAS) design around specific teacher preparation standards (At this time, no out-of-state institution has an approved UAS.)

YES, you may renew or professionalize your Indiana license, if:
  1. the out-of-state institution is NCATE* accredited, or
  2. the out-of-state institution is regionally accredited.

CONTACT THE OUT-OF-STATE INSTITUTION TO DETERMINE IF THE PROGRAM MEETS ONE OF THESE CRITERIA.

(Some out-of-state institutions do not inform Indiana applicants of this policy, even though the institution may have been notified of Indiana's policy.)

For ALL licensing actions, applicants must meet all DPS requirements for the license: teaching experience, criminal background check, testing, etc., not just the course work or degree.
