Checks Are in the Mail
Payments for $600 stipends for mentors of beginning teachers have been sent to public schools that met the October enrollment deadline. Checks for the non-public school mentors are currently being processed. Thanks to the good work of Judy Miller, Missy Nunnery, Jessica Meadows and Nancy Carr, this is the earliest these stipends have ever been paid. Payments for mentors that did not meet the enrollment deadline will be sent in June.
Earlham College
Congratulations to Earlham College on becoming the 39th institution with an IPSB approved teacher preparation program. Their master's level program that leads to initial licensing was approved at the March 19 IPSB meeting.
Standards and Licensing
Standards for Family and Consumer Science were approved by the IPSB at the March 19 meeting and will soon be available on our Web site. At the same meeting, the Board approved Driver and Traffic Safety as a licensing area. The next step will be the development of standards.
The approval of these content areas puts 26 instructional content areas, 2 administrative areas, and 4 school services areas in the Rules 2002 licensing framework. This is a major reduction from the 144 licenses in Rules 46 & 47.
Special Education Meetings
April 28, 2003: Government Center-South, Auditorium, from 10 am to 2 pm. This is an open meeting for the purpose of beginning a dialogue between P-12 and higher education regarding the special education needs in the field and special education teacher preparation programs. Please send your questions and concerns regarding the preparation of special education teachers to Mary Glenn Rinne at mgrinne@doe.in.gov by April 11 for inclusion in the meeting.
June 27, 2003: State Invitational Forum. This meeting is by invitation only and will include special education stakeholders (P-12, higher education, parents, agencies). The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the draft INTASC Model Standards for Licensing General and Special Educators of Students with Disabilities. It is the intention that these participants will then share this discussion with their constituents for consideration. These standards may be viewed at www.ccsso.org/pdfs/SPEDStds.pdf
Rules Promulgation
The IPSB approved the continuing education rule (515 IAC 7) at their March 19 meeting. The rule will now go to the Offices of the Attorney General, Secretary of State, and Governor for signatures and approval. We will let you know when the rule goes into effect.
Did you know? For persons who are called to active duty, active military service may extend the validation of a standard license for a maximum of two years given that the service occurred during the validation period of the license.
