Beginning next fall, Indiana will help teachers improve student learning by offering new computer-based instructional tools to local schools on a voluntary basis. These resources offer educators unlimited access to on-demand checkups of student progress from kindergarten through grade 8.
Learn More Indiana releases career and college survey results from 102,645 high school students statewide
A recent survey of 102,645 Indiana high school students found that Indiana students want to go to college, but many don’t have the know-how to get there. Learn More Indiana, the state’s college and career connection, conducted the survey. When asked, 95 percent of ninth and eleventh graders said they planned to continue education after high school. Yet 53 percent of the ninth graders and 37 percent of the eleventh graders reported they had not developed a plan to make education after high school a reality.
Reed unveils 'Life of Abraham Lincoln' portrait in preparation for bicentennial celebration
Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Suellen Reed encourages Hoosier students and adults to read about our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, in preparation for the bicentennial celebration of his birth coming in February 2009. In December, Spencer County artist Thomas Kennedy to unveiled his portrait of Lincoln titled “Life of Abraham Lincoln.” The portrait is now on display in Reed’s office, Statehouse Room 229, for public viewing.
Reed releases 2007 Holiday Reading List
Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Suellen Reed released her holiday book list with a list of books that celebrate Indiana. Some are by new and classic Indiana authors; other selections are about famous people associated with Indiana, as well as titles related to our museums, parks, sites, zoos and other features of our great state. A special feature of this list is the variety of books on Abraham Lincoln.
ISTEP+ passing rates up in 2007
ISTEP+ results in December revealed that approximately 72 percent of Indiana students in grades 3-10 passed state exams in English/language arts (71 percent) and mathematics (74 percent) in 2007, an increase from 2006. This continues a trend of steady, incremental progress over the past decade.
State to focus on youth health in 2008
State Health Commissioner Judy Monroe, M.D. announced the Indiana State Department of Health will convene high-school aged young people in spring 2008 to focus on health issues facing Hoosier youth. She was joined by First Lady Cheri Daniels and Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Suellen Reed. According to the 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, Indiana has seen some positive changes in the habits of young people in Indiana in recent years, but other data show youth are engaging in behaviors that could result in injury or illness
Reed prompts 16,000 Hoosier students to read, create art
More than 16,000 Hoosier students across the state participated in Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Suellen Reed “Reading Tree.” Students were asked to decorate a holiday ornament featuring a scene or character from their favorite book. Ornaments were on display in Dr. Reed’s office as well as the offices at the Indiana Department of Education through Dec. 31.
Technology Update: Students help teachers incorporate technology into classrooms
When Bob Sexton, technology teacher at Seymour Community Schools, saw Project Lead the Way students figuring out how to transfer their RoboPro program to their Play Station Portable (PSP), Sexton had an idea. The students were excited, and he wanted to challenge them to find educational applications for their PSP.
Applications available for 2008 National Youth Science Camp
The National Youth Science Foundation announces that applications are available for the 2008 National Youth Science Camp.The Science Camp is held at Bartow in the eastern mountains of W. Va., near the Monongahela National Forest. Application forms are available on the Science Camp Web site at www.nysc.org/2008 and must be submitted by Feb. 18 directly to Indiana’s selection coordinator, Jennifer Hicks, Ph.D., Science Curriculum Specialist, Indiana Department of Education, Office of Curriculum and Instruction, 151 W. Two Hoosier students chosen for US Senate Youth Program
Tara Fleming of Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers and Ryan Hicks of Central High School in Evansville were chosen to serve as delegates at the 46th Annual United States Senate Youth Program.
Six Indiana teachers named finalists for Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
Six Indiana teachers have been named finalists for the annual Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). The finalists will be recognized Feb. 15 at a luncheon at Marian College.
