Students use foldout keyboards and PDAs in most of their course studies in two Southwood Elementary fifth grades. Two grants helped the teachers get the technology after the access to the computer lab didn’t allow enough time for what teachers wanted to do in their classrooms.
Hoosier students help Indianapolis families in need

The Indiana Department of Education and the Indiana Family, Career and Community Leaders of America are teaming up with international hunger relief organization Feed The Children to provide 400 Indianapolis families with boxes of food and personal care items at 9 p.m. Thursday, March 6 at the Adams Mark Hotel (2544 Executive Drive).
Culinary arts students to compete in Indianapolis

Students from across Indiana will take part in a culinary arts competition from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 6 at the Adams Mark Hotel (2544 Executive Drive) in Indianapolis. The Indiana ProStart Student Invitational is the culmination of a two-year program designed to teach high school students the culinary and management skills needed for a career in the restaurant and foodservice industry.
Reed encourages schools to include recycling in daily routine

Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Suellen Reed encouraged schools to focus on recycling throughout this month as part of the Indiana Department of Education’s initiative “Learn Green, Live Green.” The March initiative is part of a year-long focus on environmental education announced by Reed in January.
Emergency Instructional Time Policy issued for 2007-08 school year

Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Suellen Reed issued the Emergency Instructional Time Policy, effective immediately and applicable only to the 2007-08 school year.
State to honor top math and science students

Governor Daniels announced a new state award to recognize Indiana’s top high school talent in math and science. The Hoosier High School Math and Science Awards will be given each year to the state’s best high school math student and best science student.
Muncie middle school receives national acclaim for physical education

Selma Middle School is the first school in Indiana to receive national acclaim as a National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) STARS School. The NASPE STARS program recognizes a school’s total physical education program as all teachers in the department demonstrate how their program and teaching meet national standards and guidelines.
