Department of Education releases summer reading list

Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Suellen Reed is encouraging Hoosier students to continue reading when school lets out this year with the release of the 2008 Summer Reading List. Studies show summer reading improves students’ academic performance in reading and other school subjects.

Spring has arrived, and with the warmer weather come insects and other critters. You may see insects, spiders and other bugs as pests, but did you know that many of these can benefit us? Throughout May, the Indiana Department of Education encourages Hoosiers to learn more about these helpful creatures, called beneficial organisms, through the Learn Green, Live Green focus titled “Nature’s Partners.”
Reed to end tenure as superintendent of public instruction

High school students race in 13th annual Super Mileage Challenge

Approximately 50 cars from 40 high schools across Indiana raced in the 13th annual Super Mileage Challenge. The event, sponsored by the Indiana Department of Education and the Indiana Mathematics Science and Technology Alliance (IMSTEA),was held at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis.
New proposed NCLB regulations announced

U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings announced proposed new regulations to strengthen and clarify No Child Left Behind (NCLB). The proposed regulations focus on improved accountability and transparency, uniform and disaggregated graduation rates and improved parental notification for Supplemental Education Services and public school choice.
Governor outlines plan for higher education access and affordability

At a higher education conference, Governor Mitch Daniels outlined his goal to make higher education more affordable and accessible for Hoosier students and their families. The governor told college and university trustees, faculty and administrators attending a Commission for Higher Education conference that he wants to assure that Indiana high school graduates are guaranteed two years of paid tuition at Ivy Tech Community College (approximately $3,000 per year) or an equivalent amount to attend another Indiana college or university.
Learn More Indiana announces new spokesperson

Learn More Indiana announces its new spokesperson, Jeffrey Williams, a sophomore at Hamilton Southeastern High School. Williams was chosen as a top 10 finalist based on a commerical entry he submitted regarding the steps it takes to get to college. The 10 finalists were each invited into 96.3 WHHH & IMC TV’s studio to film a 30-second audition of why they should be Learn More Indiana’s spokesperson. When the auditions went live online, Williams received the most votes from listeners.
Williams will star in a 5-week campaign on IMC-TV and 96.3 promoting the steps it takes to get to college. The commercial will be shot at Hamilton Southeastern and outline the ideas he originally submitted. He will also represent Learn More Indiana in future public relations events.
Nation honors Indiana math, science teachers

Two Indiana teachers have new titles: 2007 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching winners. Letitia McCallister, Mathematics Department Chairperson at Hamilton Southeastern High School, won the mathematics award and Deborah Teuscher, District Science Coach at MSD Pike Township, won the science award.
2008 Teacher of the Year visits President Bush

President George W. Bush congratulated Indiana’s 2008 State Teacher of the Year, Daniel Kuznik, in the Oval Office on April 30, 2008. Kuznik is a teacher at Pike High School Freshman Center in Indianapolis.
Indiana schools receive RAMP honors for exemplary school counseling

Sixty schools from 14 states will be recognized June 30
for making an exemplary commitment to comprehensive school counseling
programs, the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) announced. The schools, which reach across the K-12 spectrum, will receive the Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) designation during a special
ceremony at ASCA’s annual conference in Atlanta, Georgia.
Interstate Mining Compact Commission selects Indiana teacher for award

The Interstate Mining Compact Commission (IMCC) announced the
recipients of its ninth annual minerals education awards. The awards are presented each year in two categories: the mining awareness educator
category and the public outreach category. The mining awareness educator award is
presented to a teacher or school from one of the 24 member states of the IMCC that has
achieved excellence in one or more of the following categories: provided educational
outreach in an innovative manner that increases the level of understanding in the classroom
and/or community about mining and its impacts; promoted environmental stewardship while enhancing the understanding of issues associated with mining and natural resource development; and/or created unique educational materials or curriculum demonstrating the production and/or use of minerals and associated environmental protection. The criteria can be met through classroom and/or out-of-classroom (i.e. field trips, mine tours, etc.) activities. The winner will receive a framed award certificate and a $500 gift certificate for classroom resource materials. This year's winner in the educator awareness category is teacher Rick Crossline of MSD Wayne Township in Indianapolis.
