Imagining and Creating eLearning Grant - 2013
In acknowledging the strides that Indiana schools have made in providing ubiquitous access to devices, the Office of eLearning has proclaimed 2013 to be The Year of the Digital Learner. We believe that this connected landscape has opened doors of possibility for schools and for students, thresholds that must be crossed to bring them into the digital world. To that end, we designed the Imagining and Creating eLearning Grant identifying three strategic areas of focus to move Indiana schools forward, taking advantage of the possibilities afforded by student access to technology:
Digital Content: Create and curate rigorous, standards-aligned, content that will allow learning that is liberated from the textbook. Three of these districts will focus specifically on student produced digital content.
Customized Learning: Develop a framework for instruction that is student-paced and focused on mastery of content and skill.
Flexible Scheduling: Imagine and implement schedules for a student’s day or week that leverage digital work to break the traditional mold.
Over fifty districts applied for the grant, and through a process of online application and face-to-face pitches, the Office of eLearning has selected the following school districts to receive the Imagining and Creating eLearning Grant for 2013-2014.

Summer eLearning Conferences Grant - 2012
The Indiana Department of Education's Office of eLearning believes strongly in providing technology-rich professional development for our Indiana educators and administrators that focuses on student-centered teaching and learning. To ensure that all educators have the opportunity to engage in this type of professional learning, we are supporting Summer eLearning Regional Conferences across the state with a competitive grant of up to $15,000. The following 17 school districts are recipients of the 2013 Conference Grants.

Innovation Planning Grant - 2012
The Office of eLearning is pleased to announce 20 recipients of the 2012 Innovation Planning Grant. The intent of these grants is to incentivize thoughtful technology planning in small districts interested in creating or increasing the potential for eLearning in their classrooms. Participating districts have committed to contract with various outside evaluators to do an assessment of their current technology readiness, including technology infrastructure as well as pedagogical practices. Recipients will also form a leadership team of teachers and administrators to increase district awareness of opportunities for technology integration. These teams will also take advantage of professional development opportunities such as attending conferences and visiting neighboring districts. They will then use information gained from this learning and the technology assessment to formulate a plan for the thoughtful integration of technology into teaching and learning.

Classroom Innovation Grants - 2012
In February 2012, 35 Indiana school corporations were asked to present project proposals on how they would extend an existing or new program that would support student learning through the use of technology. The Indiana Department of Education's Office of eLearning awarded 23 of these school corporations the eLearning Classroom Innovation Grant.
Sixteen of these awards went to schools who had previously received a Classroom Innovation Grant in 2011 in order to continue their existing projects. These schools will receive up to $100,000 each.
Seven grants were awarded to school corporations who had high scores in the previous competition held in the spring of 2011. These schools will receive up to $200,000.

- Beech Grove City Schools (extended grant): Beech Grove City Schools will introduce a transformative Applied Life Sciences Pathway for interested students in grades 8-12 who live within Marion County and other area communities. Students who elect to participate in this career and college pathway will engage in an innovative curriculum design that combines public health, nutrition, local policy, food distribution, marketing, agriculture, and ecology.
- Burris Laboratory School (extended grant): Our initiative seeks to build off of the groundwork already begun at our elementary level, and extend it to our middle level, thus ensuring that our teachers will be skilled in technology use, our students will have the latest technology in their hands and be proficient in using it, and ways of interacting with the world through digital means will be established. We seek to change the culture of learning; one where students truly drive education and the teachers promote skills that make learning relevant and global in nature.
- Center Grove Community School Corporation (extended grant): We intend to expand the current innovation grant initiative, iPossibilities – Innovative Differentiation for the Diverse Early Learner, in a variety of aspects. The movement to the 1st grade classrooms will build upon our existing model proven by data. This model will be expanded to focus on activities beyond the “recall” level in Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy to the next levels, specifically “creating.” We will leverage the user-friendly components of the iPad to support all components of literacy. The focus of this project will be to design numerous collaborative projects utilizing specific apps that support digital storytelling and literacy.
- Clark-Pleasant Community School Corporation (extended grant): This project continues to focus on staff development in the area of digital curriculum as well as a 1:1 computing initiative in Grade 9.
- Danville Community School Corporation (extended grant): Danville will continue their project to improve student learning and expand tailored instruction that taps into their students’ curiosity by creating blended learning opportunities and online classes.
- East Noble School Corporation (new grant): The focus of this grant will be on professional development to support East Noble’s 1:1 computing environment. Teachers will become masters of their own technology learning and shift their classrooms from teacher-led spaces to exciting, inquiry-based centers of learning.
- Evansville Vanderburgh Community Schools (extended grant): By cultivating a Community of Digital Educators (CODE) to serve as models for teachers who struggle to envision moving from print to digital content, we believe we can responsibly free our district of future textbook adoptions. This will in turn support a shift in the teaching pedagogy from the teacher holding all of the answers to the students asking the right questions and taking an active role in learning.
- Garrett-Keyser-Butler Community Schools (extended grant): Garrett Keyser Butler’s previous grant had a strong professional development component that focused on digital curriculum. GKB will continue its journey with transformative education to create lifelong learners and upstanding citizens of the community. Affording students the opportunity for customized learning through their education is a gift that isn’t happening in most schools today - with this grant, the opportunities for students to experience transformative education at its finest.
- M S D Wabash County Schools (extended grant): This project will continue to focus on professional development of teachers. Our staff will be better skilled at using data and infusing technology - skills that will serve to increase student engagement and learning.
- Maconaquah School Corporation (new grant): This project will focus on developing digital resources as well as allowing Maconaquah to reach 1:1 computing K-12.
- Madison Consolidated Schools (extended grant): This grant will enable MCS to continue to make a significant and wide-reaching impact on their education reform goals, from the individual to community. Through the funds made available with the Classroom Innovation Grant extension, our original initiative plans will be able to expand beyond our preliminary campaigns at our High School and Junior High School. We will also be able to extend farther into our younger grades, changing culture and laying groundwork for a transforming digital curriculum in preparation for a 1:1 tablet student device. This grant opportunity will allow MCS to fully implement a BYOT initiative at the secondary level.
- North Adams Community Schools (extended grant): This project will continue to provide professional development to teachers on digital curriculum and resources as well as expand the 1:1 access from K – 12.
- Northeastern Wayne Schools (extended grant): The first leg of this project enabled Northeastern Wayne Schools to deploy a 1:1 tablet initiative. This round of funding will expand professional development opportunities to teachers in the areas of digital curriculum and content.
- Plymouth Community School Corporation (extended grant): This project will further advance Plymouth’s goal from the original Classroom Innovation goal to “Extend Learning Beyond the Classroom.” The main strategy implemented thus far has been to “Flip Instruction” in 16 classrooms. It’s time to embrace the new age of blended learning using new strategies that extend our current flip instruction model where students can use the technology already in place to better apply what they’ve learned at their own pace.
- Rensselaer Central School Corporation (new grant): This project has a strong focus in digital curriculum delivered via the iPad with a 1:1 initiative in grade 6.
- Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation (extended grant): This project will continue to focus on the development of digital resources and further the 1:1 mobile device initiative in grade 6..
- Richmond Community Schools (new grant): This project will focus on the development of an ANYTIME ANYWHERE classroom environment similar to what is available in a university or campus setting. Instructors will have in-class lecture software and hardware to capture and publish daily lectures for students to “flip” the classroom experience.
- Scott County School District 2 (extended grant): This project continues to focus on professional development in the areas of digital resources and blended courses.
- Shelbyville Central Schools (extended grant): This project will continue with a strong focus in PD for teachers and expand the 1:1 computing initiative with tablet devices
- Smith-Green Community Schools (extended grant): Professional development for administrators and teachers in the areas of core- standards and digital curriculum will continue with this project.
- Southern Hancock County Community School Corporation (new grant): Grant will support an on-site technology integrationist and development of 24/7 accessible on-line courses.
- The Bloomington Project School (new grant): Grant will support the continued development of innovative professional development strategies and proven curriculum designs in conjunction with new transformative technologies to support students and teachers in the advancement of systems-thinking dispositions.
- Tri-Creek School Corporation (new grant): This project will focus on building teacher capacity to create engaging digital lessons through development of learning objects, remixing existing free and licensed materials, and sharing them online via online classrooms.
Classroom Innovation Grants - 2011
In April, 2011, 22 school corporations were awarded Classroom Innovations Grants. We will be communicating through the Ed Tech Connect community about opportunities to learn about these initiatives as they develop. The full text of the winning applications is posted HERE. The 22 recipients and short descriptions of their projects are listed below.
- Avon Community Schools: Expansion of pilot project to introduce smart tables in second grade classrooms.
- Beech Grove City Schools: Project focus is on expanding a tested online instructional model across the high school science department where each student will have access to a computer.
- Burris Laboratory School: Project focus is on digital curriculum and integration of tablet computers in the context of training pre-service teachers.
- Center Grove Community School Corporation: Project expands on a literacy-focused pilot project involving tablet devices for targeted students (English language learners, students in special education, and kindergartners) and the creation of a database of student activities involving apps. A community-wide digital library will also be created with community partners.
- Christel House Academy: Project includes the development of a digital portfolio platform for secondary students. The e-portfolio system will equip students to personalize their own learning and then be used to support their college and university applications.
- Clark-Pleasant Community School Corporation: This project will focus on a centralized, collaborative, and consistent coordination to create 25 open digital courses.
- Danville Community School Corporation: Grant funds will be used to equip teachers to be effective in the context of a high school-wide deployment of personal tablet computers.
- East Washington School Corporation: Project will focus on piloting various models of digital curriculum across grade-levels with students accessing this curriculum using tablet computing devices.
- Evansville Vanderburgh Community Schools: Grant will focus on taking advantage of a high access computing environment by developing a team of eLearning coaches who will create an online Professional Practice Library to provide anytime anywhere professional development. The eLearning coaches will also be working closely with teacher to develop digital curriculum.
- Garrett-Keyser-Butler Community Schools: Grant will fill in gaps in Internet access for all GKB students so that personal devices can be used for learning 24/7.
- M S D Wabash County Schools: Project will provide differentiated professional development to teachers to advance digital instructional skills and create model classrooms across the corporation to create a foundation for high quality instruction as the corporation moves to access to digital devices for each student.
- Madison Consolidated Schools: Grant funds will be used to provide intensive training on developing an exportable project-based learning curriculum for secondary students and to upgrade wireless access for the campus.
- North Adams Community Schools: Project will provide intensive professional development in Project Based Learning and implementing Digital Curriculum for 50 North Adams STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Teachers and Kindergarten-12th Grade High Ability teachers. Projects will be classroom tested in high access computing classrooms and made available across the state.
- North Daviess Community Schools: Grant to support expansion of living textbook model including staff publishing projects to a project library.
- Northeastern Wayne Schools: Grant supports differentiated professional development for faculty focused on creating digital content for use in 7-12 deployment of tablet devices.
- Peru Community Schools: Grant supports technology coaching to support instruction in high access classrooms. Efforts also include formal expansion of instruction on technology skills.
- Plymouth Community School Corporation: Grant funds to support the development of instructional podcasts that secondary students can access at home in order to focus class time on project-based learning.
- Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation: Creation of 17 digital courses for middle school students who will be accessing the course materials using mobile computing devices purchased through the grant and with local funds.
- Rochester Community School Corporation: Development of course content for primary students and integration of applications (apps) into the curriculum. Students will access the content on mobile devices from school or home. Project includes parent training and community outreach.
- Scott County School District 2: Proposed project involves multi-phase professional development including a focus on Common Core Standards supported by technology. Middle school will serve as the center of an expansion effort to bring student devices and instructional expertise to leverage this individual access for learning.
- Shelbyville Central Schools: Grant efforts revolve around professional development for using apps and augmented reality in the classroom.
- Smith-Green Community Schools: Grant project provides all students grades 5-12 with a leased tablet computing device along with digital literacy training for administrators and teachers.
No grants are available at this time.
- David C. Ford Fund (Indiana Code 20-20-13) – These funds are appropriated by the Indiana General Assembly. The Department uses these funds to make grants to school corporations to promote student learning through the use of technology.
- School and Library Internet Connection – This appropriation by the Indiana General Assembly subsidizes Internet connections for schools participating in the state E-rate consortium. These funds cover a portion of the costs for connectivity not covered by E-rate. Funding of $1.8 million/year is used to support schools purchasing bandwidth from the state Internet Service Provider contract.
- Enhancing Education Through Technology Title II D – On April 11, 2011 Congress released the long-awaited details of a long-term spending bill to fund the federal government through September 2011. This bill included more than $38 billion in cuts. (See summary here.)
- A number of education programs were eliminated, including Education Technology State Grants ($100 million), Literacy Through School Libraries ($19 million), and the Byrd Honors Scholarship Program ($42 million).
