In the fall of 2015, the Office of eLearning began promoting Common Sense Education's Digital Citizenship Certification program. The free program provides recognition for establishing a school culture of awareness and commitment to norms and values in respect to learning and playing online. Certification can be earned by educators, schools, and districts.

As we continue to support the thoughtful implementation of technology in schools, we see the need to promote teaching the skills students need both in school and beyond. We recommend districts pursue the certification as a first step in that effort. Taking ownership of digital citizenship education aligns with the Future Ready Pledge and the commitment to "fostering and leading a culture of digital learning within our schools."

One of the goals of the 2016 Indiana Digital Citizenship Week was to prepare schools and districts to develop a digital citizenship vision for their learning community. The vision is a first step in pursuing certification and can guide a year-long focus on digital citizenship education. This video from Common Sense Education's 1:1 Essentials provides a great springboard for framing your vision for digital citizenship.

EXTENDED SUPPORT:

Indiana Connected Educators (ICE) offers an online course to equip educators to become school or district leaders in digital citizenship principles and facilitate their school or district's certification effort. Following completion of the six-week online course, participants will be equipped to train educators at their schools using a prepared Digital Citizenship online course in the Haiku learning management system. Course fees cover access to the training course and the site course. Participants can earn up to 20 PGPs. Once the course is completed, 10 additional educators can be enrolled in the site course which will be led by the newly trained school or district facilitator. Facilitators can deliver the course face-to-face, online, or blended to fit their school or district needs. The next cohort will be late spring/early summer. Learn more and register at the ICE website.

You are invited to join the Indiana Digital Citizenship Community to connect with others who have gone through the certification process. Michelle Green moderates the community and will make sure your questions get answered. You can also connect with Michelle directly at mgreen@doe.in.gov.

We recognize the Indiana districts and schools that completed Digital Citizenship Certification last school year and encourage them and you to pursue certification for the 2016-2017 school year!
