Key Concept:  Understanding directions helps us follow them.

 

Generalization:  Following spoken directions that have steps helps us know what goes into a task.

 

Background:  Students have been working on following directions that have from 3-5 steps.  These activities are based on interest and allow students to show their understanding of directions.

 

This lesson is tiered in product according to interest.

 

Tier I:  Students interested in peanut butter sandwiches.

These students will be given a list of the following instructions about how to make peanut butter sandwiches:

1.      Take two pieces of bread out of the bread bag.

2.      Lay the bread flat in front of you.

3.      With a spreader, spread one teaspoon of peanut butter on one piece of bread.

4.      With a spreader, spread one teaspoon of jam on the other piece of bread.

5.      Put the peanut butter bread on top of the jam bread.

6.      Have the teacher cut the sandwich in half.

 

Tier II:  Students interested in cheese sandwiches

These students will be given a list of the following instructions about how to make cheese sandwiches:

1.      Take two pieces of bread from the bread bag.

2.      Lay the bread flat in front of you.

3.      Take a piece of cheese from the cheese package.

4.      Unwrap the cheese.

5.      Place the piece of cheese on one slice of bread.

6.      Place the other piece of bread on the cheese slice.

7.      Have the teacher cut the sandwich in half.

                                               

Tier III:  Students interested in egg salad sandwiches

These students will be given a list of the following instructions about how to make egg salad sandwiches:

1.      Take two pieces of bread from the bread bag.

2.      Lay the bread flat in front of you

3.      Take one tablespoon of egg salad from the bowl.

4.      Spread the egg salad evenly across the bread.

5.      Take the second piece of bread.

6.      Put it on the egg salad piece.

7.      Have the teacher cut the sandwich in half.

 

Students will share with each other how they made their type of sandwich, explaining the steps they followed.

 

Assessment:  Teacher observation, completion of the product according to directions, and accurate portrayal of the process may be used as the assessment.  The students will eat their products.
