Subject: Language Arts Grade: Nine
Standard: #7:
Listening and Speaking Skills, Strategies, and Application
Key
Concept: Summarize a speaker's purpose
and point of view concerning the speaker's content, delivery, and attitude
toward the subject.
Generalization: Student's will work with Martin Luther
King's "I Have A Dream" speech to focus on purpose and point of view
in this classic piece.
Background: This lesson can come toward the beginning of
the year when students are beginning to identify relevant aspects of speaking
techniques for oral presentation.
This
lesson is tiered in product according
to learning profile.
Tier
I: Visual Learners
This group prefers to learn by
reading the work itself. They will read
the speech individually and will identify the specific purpose and point of
view that they find in specific lines in the text. As a group they will compile a list which they can put on
transparencies on a power point presentation to present to the rest of the
class. Their presentation should
include a statement of purpose and specific examples of point of view in the
speech. Direct quotation of text is a
part of the visual learner's focus on the importance of wording. Their product should be reflective of the
group work they did in focusing on the text of the written speech.
Tier
II: Auditory Learners
This group prefers to learn by
listening. They will listen to a tape
recording or a CD of the speech itself.
As they listen to the speech, they need to take notes according to vocal
nuances that showcase the purpose and point of view of the speech. They should identify elements of speaking
that help the listener comprehend the content.
As a group they need to choose a portion of the speech that they believe
indicates clearly the purpose and point of view and create a clip to share with
the rest of the class. Their
explanation to the class must focus on effectiveness of speaking techniques
that help the listener attend to meaning.
Assessment: Both groups will present their work based on
their careful analysis of Martin Luther King's Speech. A good culmination after both groups present
is to watch the speech on video with each group commenting on how the actual
video presentation augmented what they learned from their preferred learning
preference. They could write a
response, tape a response, or orally discuss the ideas in class.
