Nine-year-old Keiara Lewis was excited
when she got to the front of the line. Taking the pencil
from the adult volunteer’s hand; Keiara used the
sharpened tip to carefully push flower seeds into the

We are starting a campaign here at Loper
Elementary School to emphasize “Go Green” and
recycling. I have recently put together a club called “Recycle
Maniacs.” Each week the students suit up in their
lab coats and go around and pick up the recycling from
all of the classrooms. We have also made commercials. My
students call them public service announcements. These
clips are shown in the mornings to promote recycling. They
are composed of songs, skits, etc. In addition, our county
elementary schools worked together by creating a competition.
We weighed our recyclables each week from Feb. 1 through
March 1. The school with the most recyclables was awarded.
