A Message from Glenda Ritz, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction
Dear Parents and Community Supporters,
During our busy days, finding time to read can be a challenge. I hope that you are able to find the time to read with the young people in your life. The Hoosier Family of Readers is an initiative to build a culture of readers in Indiana. A reading family can be any combination of caring adults and children, reading together at home, a neighborhood library or out of school at places like the Boys and Girls Club, YMCA or scouts.
We encourage all of our reading families to read anything that interests them –including graphic novels, non-fiction books, magazines, and newspapers – whether online or in print. We suggest that they:
- Read with someone
- Read to someone
- Share with someone what he/she has read
- Listen to someone read
- Help others read
- Read independently
In addition to our ongoing partnership with the Indiana National Guard in Books & Boots, we are very excited to welcome 12 unique destination locations across the State to the Hoosier Family of Readers! In collaboration with the National Center for Families Learning, we are going to launch a brand-new website that will provide families with opportunities to visit these special places – physically and/or virtually. Visitors will be able to read about and engage in fun activities focused on the specific attractions each location offers: exploring caves; experiencing what life was like in 19th-century Indiana; even flying in a Piper airplane!
If you are a member of a community group wanting to help with this reading initiative, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know about your group and how you would like to support the Hoosier Family of Readers.
Remember, a reader is not simply someone who can read; a reader is someone who does read.
