Disaster Planning and Response: Indiana Department of Education
Homeless Children and Youth

General summary:

Students who are displaced by Hurricane Katrina may qualify as homeless under the McKinney-Vento Act. Families who are living on the street, in shelters, or in cars are homeless. Families who are living in hotels or motels as a result of lost housing or who are staying with family or friends due to loss of housing should be considered homeless. Homeless students should be enrolled in school immediately. They also qualify automatically for free textbooks, free meals (breakfast and lunch), and Title I assistance. McKinney-Vento Liaisons in each district should help the students sign up for benefits, arrange transportation, obtain records, and make referrals to community agencies that can assist them with basic needs. Students and their families can get answers on how to get federal aid and apply online at: www.fema.gov. Families that already receive benefits such as food stamps, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), or social security can transfer their benefits to their new location. Families that previously did not receive benefits may now qualify and should be referred to the local Division of Family Resources Office.
