Teacher Testing

Praxis I and Alternatives

Prior to admission to a teacher preparation program prospective Indiana educators are required to pass the Praxis I tests, which measure basic academic skills, or an approved alternative. Please note that Praxis I testing only applies to preservice teachers prior to enrollment into a program and is no longer a licensure requirement.

The following additional assessments/routes are acceptable to document basic skills competency at the time of admission to a teacher preparation program:

  • ACT with a score of at least 24 based on Math, Reading, Grammar, and Science;
  • SAT with a score of at least 1100 based on Critical Reading and Math;
  • GRE with a score of at least 1100 based on Verbal and Quantitative prior to 8/1/11;
  • GRE with a score of at least 301 based on Verbal and Quantitative after 8/1/11; or
  • Praxis I composite score of at least 527 based on Reading, Writing, and Math.

Notes: ACT, SAT, and GRE scores do not include writing. Anyone with a Master's Degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution is exempt from this requirement.

Praxis II

Indiana Educators are required to pass the Praxis Series II tests for the content areas that appear on their licenses. Information about specific tests and qualifying scores for Indiana can be found at the ETS website.

Praxis II Reports: The following are annual summaries of institution's average Praxis II results by content area as privided by ETS. Candidates self report to ETS the institution they are attending for teacher preparation. The spreadsheet presents per content area test, a ranking of institutions mean score from highest to lowest. If an examinee took the same test more than once during this time period, only the most recent score is used in this report. Scores are not disaggregated by program type and include examinees from all routes to licensure including traditional, graduate and alternative program candidates. Scores also may include candidates taking tests for REPA content area additions who may have self-reported a teacher preparation institution. This set of data may reflect candidates for which a teacher preparation institution may or may not have been responsible for preparing.

For more information about the tests and standard errors of measurement for each please refer to the ETS document Understanding Your Praxis Scores.
