Simple Line Drawings
Time Allowance: 1 Hour 15 Minutes
Equipment Needed: Paper and Pencil for Each ParticipantSteps:
1. The facilitator asks the participants to assemble into dyads and distribute paper and pencils. .
2. The facilitator explains that one member of each dyad is to draw two simple line drawings, such as geometric designs or sketches of familiar objects, that are of about the same complexity. No one is to show the drawings to his or her partner.
3. After all drawings have been completed, the members of each dyad are told to sit back to back. The member who made the drawing is instructed to tell his or her partner how to make one of them, but without revealing what the drawing is. The member who is attempting to duplicate the drawing is not allowed to communicate in any way with the other person.
4. After the new drawings have been completed, die members of each dyad are told to sit facing each other. The drawing process of Step 3 is repeated for the second of two drawings, but this time those who are doing the work are allowed to receive feed back.
5. After all drawings have been completed, the members of each dyad are instructed to compare their drawings.
6. The members of the dyads are to switch roles and repeat Steps 2 through 5.
7. The total group is reconvened, and the facilitator leads a discussion based on the following questions:
- What differences did you notice between the level of accomplishment with feedback and the level without feedback?
- What difference did you notice in the accuracy of the final products?
- As the person who gave instructions, how did you feel each time?
- As the artist, how did you feel each time?
- Which method of instruction yielded greater satisfaction? How?
8. Each participant is instructed to work independently to write a definition of feedback.
9. The dyads are reassembled, and the partners are told to discuss their definitions.
10. The facilitator reconvenes the total group, invites volunteers to share their definitions of the accuracy of the shared definitions and the importance of feedback in the communication process.
