Brainstorming
Time Allowance: Varies
Equipment Needed: Paper and pencils.
Steps:
1. Tell participants that the school has been given an enormous number of either paper clips or ping-pong balls. Make up a plausible story so that the students really believe you have these. Ask them to help out the school and you by writing down as many uses as they can think of for these. They are to write down anything that comes to mind without any self criticism.
a. Write, brainstorm, for one minute alone.
b. Get into groups of three or four. Choose a recorder who will write down all the ideas in two minutes.
c. The group has three minutes to sort through all the ideas and come to a consensus about the three best ideas.
d. Share the top three ideas with the class.2. Have the whole group discuss how this process could transfer to real life problem solving situations.
