EVENT CALENDAR

Blind Polygon

Time Allowance: 20-30 Minutes
Equipment Needed: Sixty (60) Feet of Rope

Steps

1. Have the group get into a circle about three feet apart from each other, facing into the circle.

2. Have each person put on a blindfold. Next pass a rope around the circle until every one is holding onto the rope. Tie the ends together so that the rope is a continuous circle.

3. Next call out a geometric shape (make the first few easy like a triangle, or rectangle). The group must then form into that shape with the rope. No one is allowed to let go of the rope.

4. After everyone is satisfied that they have successfully made the shape, allow them to remove their blindfolds and look. Ask questions about communication and cooperation: Why did they succeed (or not succeed)? Was there a leader? Did they communicate? Cooperate? Was anyone upset because his/her ideas were ignored?

5. Repeat using other shapes. A variation to this activity is to allow limited verbal communication (only one person may talk; everyone is only allowed to speak once; or mute everyone).

Processing Issues

1. What were some of the effective forms of communication that you used in completing this task? Ineffective forms of communication?
2. How were your differences handled?
3. In what ways could the group‚s process of communication be improved to enhance its problem-solving skills?
4. How could you improve your communication and networking?
