The Nail Problem
Time Allowance: 30 Minutes-One Hour
You may need to set your own time limits. This is an activity that people can take away and finish later.
Equipment Needed: One block of wood with a nail in it, plus 14 other identical nails per each group.
Steps
1. Break your large group into smaller groups of three to five.
2. Give each group one block of wood with one nail nailed into it about one quarter of an inch and fourteen extra identical nails.
3. The purpose is to balance the fourteen nails on the head of the nail that is hammered into the block of wood.
4. You can only use the fourteen nails and no other materials. The fourteen balanced nails cannot touch the block of wood at any time. The nails must remain balanced on the head of the nail for at least ten seconds.
