Gridded Response Items:

The Fall ISTEP+ mathematics assessments in Grades 7, 8, 9, and the GQE will consist of 3 different types of items: multiple choice, open ended, and gridded response.

A short practice test has been developed that can be used with students to help prepare them for the gridded items on these tests. These items are but a small subset of the types of gridded items students may encounter on the test.

Included with the practice test is a scoring guide. This scoring guide may be used to assist teachers and students identify some of the many ways an answer may be gridded correctly.

Reference Sheet:

By the time students are entering Grade 7 they should understand how to use and when to apply certain formulas and conversions when solving problems. The ISTEP+ mathematics assessments for Grades 7, 8, 9, and the GQE will therefore provide a reference sheet of formulas for students to use when taking the assessment.

Two different reference sheets have been developed for the grade spans 7-8 and 9-10. Both reference sheets are being made available so that students and teachers may have the opportunity to use and become familiar with them before the actual test.

Calculators:

Calculators are not required on ISTEP+; however, they will be allowed on some sections of the math assessment in Grades 7, 8, 9, as well as the GQE and GQE Retest.
Students in Grades 3 through 6 will not be allowed the use of a calculator. The only exception for each of the grades is if it is otherwise stated by the student’s IEP.

The ISTEP+ mathematics assessment in Grades 7, 8, 9, and the GQE will allow students to use a calculator to solve problems on certain parts of the test.

General directions for calculator usage on ISTEP+ in Grades 7, 8, 9, as well as the GQE and GQE Retest.

  • Sharing calculators is not allowed.
  • Students are to use calculators they are familiar with.

All items on the test can be answered without the use of a calculator.

  • Students are to use his or her best judgment as to when to use the calculator. The calculator is meant to aid in problem solving, not get in the way.
  • For open-ended items, students should write down the process for solving the problem then use the calculator to do the actual computation.

Students will be allowed to use their own calculator if it is NOT one of the types of calculators listed below:

Not permitted on ISTEP+: Please note that this is not meant to be a complete list and is intended only for students who do not have an IEP. Students with an IEP stating they are allowed to use their own calculator during testing may do so even if it appears on this list. Contact your testing coordinator should you have any questions regarding whether or not a calculator is permitted.
