How to Renew Instructional and Administrative Licenses
You should not apply for your renewal more than 45 days prior to the expiration date. The date of your renewal will be the date we receive payment for the license, and the expiration date will correspond. Applying for a renewal far in advance of your expiration date is unnecessary and will result in loss of the period of validity between the date you pay for your renewal and your actual expiration date.
Effective July 1, 2012, applicants for initial licensure of any type and applicants for all renewals must show proof of valid CPR/AED/Heimlich certification. For applications submitted and paid in LVIS on or before June 30, 2012, the current requirement will be honored even though the license may not be processed by licensing advisors or OELD staff until July 1, 2012, or after. Complete a profile, an application and pay for the application through our online Licensing Verification and Information System, LVIS. Then, select the best option (below) based upon your situation.
Initial Practitioner (IP) license holders, select one (1) of the following:
- IP (2-Year) license holders who have not completed IMAP - Submit all materials and a one paragraph statement explaining why you have not completed IMAP.
- IP (2-Year) license holders who have completed IMAP - Submit all materials and the IMAP completion letter you received from your principal/supervisor/director. Your school/school corporation must email the IDOE the School IMAP Approval Form to verify your completion. All IMAP completers can find more information by clicking HERE.
An individual with an IP license may renew that license twice upon application. If after the third IP license has been issued (second renewal), the license has still not completed the IMAP program that is required to obtain a five-year Proficient Practitioner license, then the license holder must complete a Professional Growth Plan (PGP) with a total of 90 points or take a Pearson IN Core Content Area exam to start the six-year IP cycle over. Coursework or professional development included in a PGP must have been completed since the issue date of the first IP license.
For all other Instructional or Administrative license holders, select one (1) of the following:
- Six (6) semester hours completed at an accredited Indiana institution – The six (6) semester hours must have been completed after the issue date of the license you are renewing.
- Six (6) semester hours completed at an accredited Out-of-State institution - Submit all materials through LVIS. The six (6) semester hours must have been completed after the issue date of the license you are renewing.
- Professional Growth Plan (PGP) – For more information on the PGP, click HERE.
- National Board of Professional Teaching Standards Certification (NBPTS) - Submit all materials and a copy of your NBPTS certification through LVIS. Click HERE to visit the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards website.
Approved renewal course work may include education courses and/or courses taken in one or more areas on the teaching license. Courses used for license renewal must be from a regionally accredited institution and must have been earned after the issue date of the license you are trying to renew. The licensing advisor at an Indiana institution can advise you about approved renewal courses at that institution. Renewal courses earned out-of-state do not need to be pre-approved as long as the course work is earned in professional education or in one or more of the licensing areas. For approval of other out-of-state courses for renewal, e-mail your request to email@example.com. Renewal coursework may be either at graduate or the undergraduate level. However, if you hold an administration and supervision license or a school services personnel license, graduate coursework is strongly encouraged.
License Expiration Information
All licenses that are valid on the first day of the academic school year shall be considered valid for the duration of that academic school year. There is no penalty for not completing the required course work or Professional Growth Plan after the expiration date of the license. However, the license will not be renewed until the requirements have been met.
