School Services Licensure - School Counselor and School Psychologist

How to Apply for an Original School Counselor or School Psychologist License

Applicants must have at least a Master's degree to obtain a School Counselor or School Psychologist license.

NOTE: To be considered for an evaluation, you must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree for school services and administrative licensure) from an institution regionally accredited to offer degrees in education OR be a graduate of a regionally accredited institution and meet the education requirements for your state. Coursework in School Service Standards will also be required. Meeting minimum requirements for evaluation does NOT guarantee issuance of an Indiana instructional, administrative or school services license.

In-State Applicants

  1. Complete a profile, application and pay for the application through our online system, LVIS. Click HERE to access LVIS information.

  2. A copy of your CPR/Heimlich maneuver certification, click HERE for more information and a list of approved providers.
     
  3. After July 1, 2013-- Suicide Prevention Training Certificate. Click here for a link to resources.
  4. Submit all these materials in LVIS and then select your recommending Institution and then the Licensing Advisor will process your licensure.  Click HERE for a list of Licensing Advisors.

Out-of-State Applicants

  1. Complete a profile, application and pay for the application through our online system, LVIS.  Click HERE to access LVIS information. You will also need the following materials:

  2. A copy of your CPR/Heimlich maneuver certification, click HERE for more information and a list of approved providers.
     
  3. After July 1, 2013-- Suicide Prevention Training Certificate. Click here for a link to resources.
  4. Official transcripts that bear the sign and/or seal of the registrar, the degree and date conferred. Provide transcripts for ALL completed coursework at ALL institutions attended. Transcripts must be included with evaluation materials. Do NOT order transcripts to be sent directly to the Office of Educator Licensing and Development.

  5. A copy of your valid School Counselor or School Psychologist License if you have held one in another state.

  6. Verification of any out-of-state experience as a School Counselor or School Psychologist. The letter is to be composed on school letterhead and signed by an administrator. The letter needs to include dates of employment, position(s) held, and the type and status of school accreditation. It is only necessary for the administrator from your last place of employment to verify all your experience.

How to Renew a School Counselor or School Psychologist License

1. Complete a profile, application and pay for the application through our online system, LVIS. Click HERE to access LVIS information. You will also need the following materials:

Initial Practitioner (IP) license holders, select one (1) of the following:

  • IP (2-Year) license holders who have not completed IMAP - Submit all materials and a one paragraph statement explaining why you have not completed IMAP.

  • IP (2-Year) license holders who have completed IMAP - Submit all materials and the IMAP completion letter you received from your principal/supervisor/director. Your school/school corporation must email the Indiana Department of Education the School IMAP Approval Form to verify your completion. All IMAP completers can find more information by clicking HERE.

An individual with an IP license may renew that license twice upon application. If, after the third IP license has been issued (second renewal) the license holder has still not completed the IMAP program that is required to obtain a five-year Proficient Practitioner license, the license holder must complete a Professional Growth Plan (PGP) with a total of 90 points or take a Praxis II exam in order to start the 6-year IP cycle over. Coursework or professional development included in a PGP must have been completed since the issue date of the first IP license.

For all other license holders select one (1) of the following:

  • Six (6) semester hours completed at an accredited Indiana institution– The six (6) semester hours must have been completed after the issue date of the license you are renewing.

  • Six (6) semester hours completed at an accredited Out-of-State institution- Submit all materials and official transcripts directly to the Office of Educator Licensing and Development. The six (6) semester hours must have been completed after the issue date of the license you are renewing.
