Important Announcement on Proposed Licensing Rule Changes
 
The State Board of Education has begun the promulgation process to make changes to Indiana’s educator preparation and licensure rules. The document containing these proposed rule changes is referred to as REPA 3 (or REPA III).  REPA III was published as a proposed rule in the Indiana Register on December 18, 2013 along with the notice for three public hearings that will occur next month (January 13, 14 and 16, 2014) in northern, central and southern Indiana. Testing Information:
Indiana is transitioning away from Praxis I to a new basic skills assessment—called CASA—during the summer of 2013. Passage of the basic skills assessment (math, reading and writing) is required for candidates seeking admission to Indiana teacher preparation programs. Registration may be completed now at www.in.nesinc.com , but CASA test administration will not begin until July 1. During July and August, candidates may choose to take either the Praxis I basic skills tests or the CASA tests, but Praxis I will no longer be available after August 31, 2013. Candidates who do not pass all three sections of Praxis I by August 31 need register only for the portion of the CASA they still need to pass.There is a free CASA study guide available on the website (under preparation materials). Click here for the website.Fee-based practice tests will be available by June 1 for individual subtests or a practice test for all 3 subtests combined.

Important Change Effective July 1, 2013

The following requirement does not apply to substitute teacher permit applicants or educational interpreter applications.

Effective July 1, 2013, the department may not issue an initial teaching license (includes instructional, student services and administrative licenses) at any grade level to an applicant for an initial teaching license unless the applicant shows evidence that the applicant has successfully completed education and training on the prevention of child suicide and the recognition of signs that a student may be considering suicide. This requirement does not apply to a completed license application submitted and paid for in the LVIS online application system prior to July 1, 2013 even though the license may not be processed by licensing advisors or OELD staff until July 1, 2013 or after.

Important Change Effective July 1, 2012

Effective July 1, 2012, applicants for initial licensure of any type and applicants for all renewals must show proof of valid CPR/AED/Heimlich certification. For applications submitted and paid in LVIS on or before June 30, 2012, the old requirement will be honored even though the licenses may not be processed by licensing advisors or OELD staff until July 1, 2012, or after.
