Session #1: Utilizing Data to Support ESL Instruction Using Technology
Description:  This session will provide an overview of Monroe County School Corporation’s data management system for LEP students’ files such as the ILP, monitoring forms, and other relevant records.   Participants can expect to learn how these report tools function and how to understand the template used to track and monitor them.  No advanced technological skills are required to use the information that will be presented, though basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel would be helpful.

Session #2: Secondary Students with Low Literacy Levels:  Strategies for Success | Handout 1
Presenter:  Diane Pecoraro; Independent Consultant, Minnesota
Description: The focus of this session will be on defining classroom strategies and program supports that will help newcomers with low literacy skills reach high school completion and further education or training.  Participants will develop teaching strategies and build a network in Indiana to improve services to newcomers with low literacy skills.

Session #3: Test Taking Strategies:  SMART 7/QAR | Handout
Description: This session will provide teachers with an overview of using Question Answer Response (QAR) and SMART 7, a seven-step test taking strategy, to improve students’ comprehension and understanding of the genre of tests.  Strategies will be modeled and teachers will be given the opportunity to apply them during the session.

Session #4: Classroom Teachers Learn How to Modify for ELLs | Handout 1
Presenters:  Jenny Noble-Kuchera, Catherine Marchese, and Julia Copeland; Monroe County SC
Description:  This session will address modifying assignments in the mainstream classroom for students at all English proficiency levels, both in advance and “on the fly.”  Materials will be provided demonstrating modification practices and examples from classrooms will be used.  A hands-on approach for participants will be used for this presentation.

Presenters:  Tina Greene and Julie Sigmund; MSD Pike Township, Indianapolis
Description
: This session will focus on the misconception that math is universal and will include interactive, hands-on strategies which will help integrate essential math vocabulary and concepts with English language instruction.  Attendees will have the opportunity to role-play and view video clips highlighting differences.  These activities will include:  portable word walls, reference folders, video clips, and ideas for classroom aides.

Session #6: Using the Indiana State ELP Standards to Guide Content Area Classroom Instructional Modifications | Handout 1 - Handout 2 - Handout 3 - Handout 4 - Handout 5
Presenter:  Nicole M. Hands; Lafayette SC
Description:  In this session participants will be given guidance on how to use Indiana’s English Language Proficiency (ELP) standards to direct student performance in any content area classroom.  Teachers will examine when and how they expect students to use English in their classrooms and will reflect upon how to modify instruction using unwrapped ELP standards.

Session #8: Camp Can Do:  A Summer School Program That Works
Presenters: Sandra Madriaga, Stacia Kinman, Cathy Hoffman, and Krista Wagner; Evansville-Vanderburgh SC
Description:  This session will provide an overview of the Camp Can Do program; a summer program designed to provide a continuum of ESL services to help LEP students continue to improve in English language proficiency throughout the summer months.  Teachers will show examples of student work, provide details of selected activities, discuss academic gains and give specifics on how a similar after-school or summer program can be organized.  Session attendees will learn how to identify funding sources to supplement Title III and develop strategies for implementation.

Presenters:  Tom Good and Debbie Ortega; Goshen CS
Description: An outline of the implementation of the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) at the elementary level in Goshen CS will be given in this session.   The presentation will provide an overview of the different components of SIOP.  The use of hands-on, interactive application of best practices to teach the components will allow educators to take concrete strategies back with them to their educational settings for immediate use with ELL students. 

Session #10: Bienvenido Program and ENL Students:  Making a Difference
Presenters:  Gilberto Pérez, Melanie Tijerina and Ellen Krulewitch; Northeastern Center, Ligonier
Description:  This session will outline the goals, objectives and theoretical premises of the Bienvenido program which was designed to address the migration experience of recently arrived Latino immigrants in the school setting.  Participants will gain knowledge on lessons learned from the program’s implementation in an Indiana high school setting and will receive data that illustrates the outcomes of the program.

Session #11: Fostering Writing Development of Secondary ELLs:  Overcoming Fears, Tears, and the Dreaded Five-Paragraph Essay
Presenters:  Mary Cole and Susan Adams; Indianapolis Public Schools
Description:  The focus of this session will be to present participants with a variety of strategies and approaches used to encourage even newcomers to start writing.  It will be demonstrated that a combination of graphic organizers, a text-rich environment, student-selected topics, writing scaffolds and other methods can encourage writing production from ELLs.  Indiana English Language Proficiency standards related to writing will also be addressed.

Session #12: What Every Administrator Needs to Know about ESL
Presenters:  Trish Morita-Mullaney, Erika Tran, Michelle Staresnick; MSD Lawrence Twp., Indianapolis

Description:  This session, designed to address administrative needs, will focus on instruction and assessment, professional development for all staff, attendance and engagement, and family involvement.  A concrete framework will be provided for assessing the quality of services provided to ESL students and concrete suggestions for deployment.
