The next K-12 ESL Conference has been scheduled for March 20, 2009 and will feature keynote speaker Dr. Deborah Short. Dr. Short is a Senior Research Associate at the Center for Applied Linguistics and the author of several books including: “New Ways in Teaching English at the Secondary Level” and “Making Content Comprehensible for English Language Learners; The SIOP Model” (third Edition). Certification Renewal Units (CRUs) will be available for this event.
Keynote Description:
As a result of this keynote presentation, participants will
1. Review recent research on academic literacy and English language learners (ELLs)
2. Explore instructional practices that promote academic literacy for language and content classrooms
This keynote will discuss applications of research findings to educational practices for English language learners. Drawing on recent literature reviews and reports from the National Literacy Panel on Language Minority Children and Youth, the adolescent ELL literacy policy panel, and the Center for Research on Education, Diversity & Excellence’s research synthesis, this talk will identify new and confirmed findings regarding practices for developing academic literacy among students learning English as a new language. Research-based instructional practices will be described, demonstrated, and applied to language and content area classrooms, with particular attention to vocabulary, reading, and writing development.
