English
as a New Language (ENL) Course |
This memorandum is to update all Indiana school corporations on
the State requirements for teachers of the high school course ENL
#1012. The course description states the following:
“English as a New Language (ENL) provides
limited English proficient (LEP) students with instruction in
English that would improve their proficiency in listening, speaking,
reading, and writing. Emphasis is placed on helping students to
function within the regular school setting and within an English
speaking society.”
After consultation with the Indiana Professional Standards
Board (IPSB), and the Division of Program Development, the following
guidance on licensure and credit granting has been developed for
this course.
- A maximum of four (4) credits may be earned through
this course title in the world language area (elective credit),
or in the English language arts area, or a combination of the
two areas, provided that the Indiana English Language Proficiency
Standards are utilized.
For the purposes of granting credit for work done
in the ENL course, the Indiana Professional Standards Board provides
the following guidance:
- Any teacher with a Rules 46/47 license may teach
ENL and grant English credit.
- Any teacher with a Rules 2002 license must have
an ESL/ENL certification to teach ENL and grant credit.
