In taking a close
look at the giraffe there didn't seem to be a
more fitting symbol for the Academy. We learned
that the average adult giraffe weighs about 2,000
pounds, making it a giant of an animal. Amazingly,
the average giraffe heart weighs approximately
25 pounds. Because of their height, the giraffe
has a couple of advantages. First of all they
are able to reach the leaves at the top of the
trees. These leaves are the freshest and closest
to the sun. Secondly, they are able to see far
into the distance, truly making them an animal
with vision. At the same time what gives them
advantages can also lead to risks. To reach the
leaves at the top of the trees, the giraffe must
stabilize its body by slightly spreading its legs.
It is at this point that the giraffe is most vulnerable
to its predator. To get the very best, to be the
very best, the giraffe must stick its neck out
and take a risk. And so we thought the same applied
to us. If we are to be the best we must be willing
to stick our necks out and take risks...especially
for kids.
