• Just how does one get the free RealPlayer?

The RealPlayer is a freeware program developed by Real Networks and (under license) is used by the Indiana Department of Education. You can click on the graphic to the right, or any Program Focus page, to download the RealPlayer for your computer.

• About RealVideo

The Indiana Department of Education is offering special events and featured state-wide occasions in an audio and video format over the Internet. The technology is appropriately called streaming and the platform is known as RealVideo.

RealVideo operates by taking a video or audio signal from any source and compressing it for delivery over the Internet. Since the Internet can deliver information to practically any location in the World, it is as easy to sit in an Indiana classroom watching the most recent State School Board meeting or be in Kakuda, Japan experiencing videos of spring-time in our fine state.

For the "techies", RealVideo was developed by Real Networks as a solution for compressing video and audio signals and streaming the signal (providing continuous data) from our server to your computer. The Educational Information Systems of the Department of Education takes source media (like a video tape or a live camera feed) and compresses it with a dedicated PC. The information is then served to the schools from a box running Red Hat Linux.

After you download and install the RealVideo program for your computer you'll notice the benefits of using this remarkable technology. Whether you're using a 14.4 Kbps modem or a full T1 connection to the Internet you can enjoy the selections we are providing. When accessing our RealVideo servers, your client software will automatically adjust to the bandwidth of your particular Internet connection. If you have a fast connection your sound and video quality will be better -- or you can configure your client to operate at a slower rate so you can continue using other Internet programs.
