As principal of IPS Harsham Middle School in Indianapolis, Marcia Capuano has created and implemented several programs and strategies to advise the needs of the economically disadvantaged community she services. Ms. Capuano has successfully involved various sectors of the community in the solutions to the many programs facing a school that only four years ago registered an attendance rate of 70%. Local agencies, businesses and community service projects, as well as organizations such as the Indianapolis Art League and representatives of the juvenile justice system, have all become active participants in the educational partnership created by Ms. Capuano. Ms. Capuano is deeply gratified that her efforts, including a comprehensive in-school Adolescent Teen Clinic, have led to an improved learning environment and have helped increase the student attendance rate to 93%.
