PROFESSIONAL
EXPERIENCES AND AWARDS:
The American literature
class that Richard Phillipy teaches to eleventh-graders
at Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis has
evolved to include much more than the traditional curriculum.
As an interdisciplinary team-educator, Mr. Phillipy
has helped develop a class in American history, literature,
art and music. His "Sea to Shining Sea "project,
now in its eighth year, was designed to improve student
knowledge of United States geography. Today, the project
has grown from its original form as an 8 x 12-foot
two-dimensional map to a complex 20-foot three-dimensional
multimedia presentation. This year, students have incorporated
animation, video technology and music as well as a
working lighthouse, a California earthquake simulation
and a waterfall with real water. In addition to its
success as a tool for interdisciplinary education, "The
interest generated by this project," says Mr.
Phillipy, "excites the entire school." |
