Math
teacher Gregory Macklein uses a full range of instructional
techniques to reach all levels of students in his math
classes at Elkhart Memorial High School in Elkhart. These
strategies include large- and small-group discussions,
lab-style activities, technology, real-world examples
and cooperative learning. The number of upper-level
math
courses at Elkhart has proliferated since Mr. Macklein
began teaching, and a Discrete Mathematics elective
he
created has seen a fivefold increase in enrollment. He
is the head coach of the Academic Decathlon team, which
recently ranked second in the state. Mr. Macklein has
been trained by the Indiana Professional Standards Board
to score new teacher portfolios and recently received
a grant to travel to Europe to study the origins of
math. |
