Principal Diane Lee Scott has implemented numerous strategies to increase achievement and improve behavior among all of her students at Stokes Elementary School in Lebanon. To provide the most effective instruction for the school's many at-risk students, Mrs. Scott hired expert consultants on at-risk education to train her staff and implemented a full-day kindergarten program for young children assessed as "at risk." She has also helped students learn effective conflict management skills by implementing the Indiana Department of Education's Project PEACE program. Mrs. Scott's Preview Summer program helps students and parents prepare for the transition from summer vacation back to school. During the year, she makes the computer lab and media center available to students on Wednesday afternoons and evenings, with staff members and community volunteers on hand to provide instructional guidance and support.
